Lucas Thatcher has always been my enemy.
It’s been a decade since I’ve seen him, but our years on opposite coasts were less of a lasting peace and more of a temporary cease-fire. Now that we’re both back in our small town, I know Lucas expects the same old war, but I’ve changed since high school—and from the looks of it, so has he.
The arrogant boy who was my teenage rival is now a chiseled doctor armed with intimidating good looks. He is Lucas Thatcher 2.0, the new and improved version I’ll be competing with in the workplace instead of the schoolyard.
I’m not worried; I’m a doctor now too, board-certified and sexy in a white coat. It almost feels like winning will be too easy—until Lucas unveils a tactic neither of us has ever used before: sexual warfare.
The day he pushes me up against the wall and presses his lips to mine, I can’t help but wonder if he’s filling me with passion or poison. Every fleeting touch is perfect torture. With every stolen kiss, my walls crumble a little more. After all this time, Lucas knows exactly how to strip me of my defenses, but I’m in no hurry to surrender.
Knowing thy enemy has never felt so good

ARC Review: A Place in the Sun by R.S. Grey

image

Hello everyone!! Happy Tuesday!!

R.S. Grey’s latest book released yesterday! A Place in the Sun is SOOOO GOOD!!!

sinopsis

a-place-in-the-sun

When her mother’s incessant matchmaking hits an all-time high, Georgie Archibald does what any sensible woman would do: she flees the country.

Seeking refuge in the picturesque seaside village of Vernazza, Italy, Georgie’s only plan is to lie low, gorge herself on gelato, and let the wine and waves wash her troubles away… that is until she wakes up in a bed that belongs to the most romantic-looking man she’s ever seen.

Gianluca.

After going out of his way to rescue her, the former London financier turned mysterious recluse makes it clear that despite acting as her white knight, he has no plans to co-star in her fairytale.

But Georgie isn’t asking for his heart—she’s merely intrigued.

After all, Gianluca isn’t just gorgeous—tall and tan from days spent in the sun—his touch sets her world on fire. With him, Georgie experiences the most intoxicating passion she’s ever known, and it only takes a few steamy nights for her to realize that sometimes running away from trouble is the best way to find it.

MY REVIEW:

***ARC received in exchange of an honest review***

Well, I’ve been a fan of Rachel’s writing since I read With This Heart when it was released back then. Since then I’ve read all her books and, in my opinion, A Place in the Sun is her best work yet!!

I absolutely love Rachel’s approach in writing, the way she writes the story becomes natural. It’s light, but it’s not empty! And we can definitely relate with her characters. She has a great sense of humor and if you’re ever in a “book funk”, her books are definitely bound to get you out of it!

A Place in the Sun is set in Vernazza, Italy. If you follow Racher on social media you’ve seen she travelled there a few months ago and I can say she definitely got it right on her book. I’ve never been to Italy and I felt like I was there with the characters. It didn’t feel like she was writing about Italy and we are reading about it. It reads like we are actually LIVING and BREATHING Italy, along with the characters.

I felt in love with the story in this book as much as I did with the characters. I LOVE Georgie! Rachel’s heroines are aleays funny and entertaining, there’s just something about Georgie! And I love how Rachel focused on her present in Italy and not in her family and past (although I wish there was a bit more about them towards the end, I think it would have been fun to read, but it doesn’t atke anything from the story or from my enjoyment of it). And Gianluca…*sigh*. When I go to Italy I need to meet my own Gianluca and if I won’t I’ll blame Rachel for creating expectations in my head! He is perfect, not only as a book boyfriend, but perfect for Georgie too!

As usual, the side characters are also important and great! This time, not only the heroine’s sidekick is awesome, but also the hero’s too! Massimo and Katherine are definitely awesome and the story wouldn’t have been the same without them.

Some people think that when we say a book is “light”, it is a bad thing or a flaw. But not me! I LOVE light reads that are so well written they rank along (and sometimes even higher) with what people would call “deeper” books. There’s a way to write light and sweet books and the way Rachel does it, you don’t even remember these labels exist.

A Place in the Sun is the kind of book you don’t want to finish, because you’re enjoying it too much. The story could go forever and I think it’d still have things to add for us to read. While reading it, I physically wanted to get inside the book! I loved how it conveyed all of these emotions. How we laugh with the characters, swoon with them and have fun with them. We fall in love with them (and along side them), and I guarantee they’ll make you put Italy in your list of places to visit, if you haven’t already!

A Place in the Sun will leave you with a book hangover and you’ll want to read it again, just to experience all the feels again and also to be so entrapped with Italy again! I’ll make you understnd “wanderlust” so much more. It goes beyond a feeling, it’s a physical need. This book will give you “bookerlust”!

Book Review: Roomates by Erin Leigh (Tara Brown)

Hey everyone!!

So, as usual I’m late with this review…I read the ARC before it was published and I loved it! If you don’t know, Erin Leigh is the contemporary/funny romance side of Tara Brown, one of my all time favorite writers!!

sinopsis

RoomatesLife is full of expectations.
For Brady Coldwell it’s always been about the game.
Hockey is and always will be, his life.
His family sacrificed everything to get him here and he won’t let them down.
He knows what’s expected of him.
Natalie Banks is no different.
She too knows what it means to have everyone sacrifice for you.
She knows about the debt that’s left owing in the end and the price you pay for making up your own mind.
But when an innocent mistake lands them as roommates, neither of them is prepared for the feelings they have or the consequences of their actions.
How do you negotiate matters of the heart?
How do you say no when it simply feels so right?

MY REVIEW:

***** ARC received in exchange of an honest opinion *****

I absolutely LOVE Tara Brown writing as Erin Leigh. Her sense of humor is so great!!! I love how she deals with things in a funny way and how it works for her writing style.

I knew from the blurb Roomates would be my kind of book. I LOVE romantic comedies like this one and it didn’t disappoint!

The heroine is super funny, love Nat! And our hero, BJ? Tara NAILED making him the perfect guy. Not perfect as in flawless, but perfect because he is SUCH A GUY! I mean, he is sort of a man slut, he treats girls as if they were disposable…until he finds the PERFECT girl. Not only for him, but for any other guy….Nat is hot, she plays videogames (and is a BADASS at it), she doesn’t cook, but compensates in being awesome (if you didn’t get that I fell in love with him over his guy ways, I did when he started COOKING!!)!

I loved that this book didn’t have a complicated plotline, it was a fun ride and I truly enjoyed it alongside with the charactes. I mean, a story about a manwhore changing his ways when he finds the perfect girl for him? Plus, Roomates had some HOT scenes!!! Brady and Nat’s chemestry is undeniable and I LOVED when they gave in to it! The problem with those two wasn’t admiting they were attracted to each other, though. It was admiting to themselves they actually wanted it.

Nat’s boyfriend is a douche, I mean, Brady is a manwhore, but he is a nice guy. But the way Nat acted on it and got her revenge was EPIC!!! I want to do that too one day (as long as I find myself a Brady too!! )! Her parents though? They were CRAZY! The good kind of crazy!

One of the things I enjoyed this story so much, is that even though it’s a funny, uncomplicated read, it was a well-done one. I love that the love story was built and the characters (and us, the readers) had the time to get to know each other and fall in love. It wasn’t rushed.

The secondary characters were great too and now I want Matt and Sami’s story too!!! I’m very curious about those two!!!

Roomates is the kind of romantic comedy that should be turn into a movie ASAP, because I would go watch it at the movies over and over! I want to be a part of Tara’s next book as Erin Leigh, because it looks like the characters have so much fun together!!!

I had a sports romance only phase, I’ve read almost all of Jaci Burton’s Play-By-Play series and the hockey one is one of my favorites, so I enjoyed this aspect of Roomates too. It’s always great to find a new hot player to love. Even the ones who are manwhores and ocasional pigs towards women. Brady did compensate for that though.
I love all the action involved in hockey! I wish we had it, but then we would have to have snow and I don’t think I’m ready for snow in Brazil hahaha.

Oh another thing I LOVED, is the fact that Nat could be you or me. Starting with her job…she ends up working with something that became part of my own reality! And Tara did a great job describing it, because it’s something she knows (I love the sense of humour involving those kind of models, by the way ahaha)! Kudos for that part of the story as well!

I can’t for more of Tara’s releases, in any of her writing personas, because I absolutely ADORE her writing. No one does plot twists like her, even in her funny and romantic books, we can still find them!!

ARC Review: The Allure of Dean Haper (The Allure #2) by R.S. Grey

Hey everyone!!

As usual, this review was supposed to have been posted before, on the release day. But then you already know my computer is shit right now and life is just too much sometimes.

Anyways, before I even begin to talk about the book, I need to CONGRATULATE R.S. Grey for the success!!! The last time I checked, The Allure of Dean Harper was sitting at #9 on Amazon and that is AMAZING! Rachel deserves all the success! She works hard on her books, from the concept, to the stories and to the covers, she does an AMAZING job of being an author. Plus she is the cutest ever! I love her videos and just everything Rachel! #FangirlAlert

Subject: You’re a flippin’ idiot

Good morning my dear, naive friend,

I hope you’re enjoying a breakfast of regret and sorrow.

Why?

Because you sent me to work for Dean Harper, aka a control freak in a tailor-made suit. Sure he owns the trendiest restaurants in NYC, but c’mon Jo, his ego makes Kanye West look like the Dalai Lama.

He’s the type of guy that only hears the word “no” when it’s followed by “don’t stop.”

Working for Dean Harper would be like selling my soul to the devil…and before you say anything, I don’t care if the devil has punch-you-in-the-gut brown eyes and an ass to match. My soul isn’t for sale.

Regretfully yours,
Lily

The Allure of Dean Harper is a full-length standalone romance with overlapping characters from The Allure of Julian Lefray. Both books can be read separately. Chronologically, The Allure of Julian Lefray happens first.

MY REVIEW:

I’ve read all of R.S. Grey’s books and this one is the 5th I review ( I will post the links to all my reviews in the end of this review). What all of them have in common? They are all written with Rachel’s characteristic wit and funny banters!

I LOVE how natural Rachel’s dialogues are and how her characters could be you, me and our best friends.

In The Allure of Dean Harper we have a story involving Dean, Julian Lefray’s best friend, and Lily, who is the best friend of Jo, the heroine of The Allure of Julian Lefray. Dean and Lily are very different from Julian and Jo. For instance, Julian and Jo didn’t fight nearly as much as Dean and Lily. LOL

I LOVED Lily! She was sassy and funny and a great worker, besides a good friend. I also liked Dean. I do wish there were more of this two in the book, I mean, like in the process of fighting and sleeping together, like more courting or something. I feel like I missed a part of their story because when I saw I was at almost 90% of the book. It’s not a bad thing, but that would have made me connect with them a bit more and also wouldn’t have made me feel like I missed something in the story. To me, the big conflict all books have weren’t a big one, so when it was all resolved I felt like I was missing something.

Aside from that I really liked Dean and Lily’s story. I loved all their interactions with their friends and I wish there were more “fights” and banter between those two, because too much of it isn’t even enough, that’s how much I liked it!

Lily is a girl who is not afraid to work for what she wants. She has a food critique blog and also wants to work advicing restaurants about their food and drink menus. She is a GREAT mixologist and makes the perfect drinks (despite Dean being a jerk and saying her drinks needed more of this and more of that LOL), plus she really gets food. She has a gift to please people through knowing the perfect food and drinks for them.

Dean is a control freak. Specially when it comes to his restaurants and he belives he is successful because of it. He can’t let anyone take any small part of control in his business. Specially the hot new bartender telling him her drinks are better than the ones the paid to get on his menu. As the story progresses we see that Dean realizes he needs to let go of his control a bit. Otherwise he will be, not only alone, but very alone.

I liked to see the evolution in these two characters. Together and individually they truly grow up, specially Dean.

As I said I love R.S. Grey’s witty humor and funny stories and this one isn’t different. Some of the scenes in The Allure of Dean Harper made me laugh out loud! Rachel have the uncanny ability to make us laugh about things in a real way. She doesn’t force the funny in ther books, it’s smart and adorable.

I really do believe her characters could be friends I’d meet on the streets (and I would be so happy if that actually happened). Her heroines are sassy and have the kind of humor I appreciate on real life people, so I adore it in the book life ones! The heroes make me swoon and they are great companions to the heroines. They do make a team. They’re partners in crime (which remind me of a certain strip club scene that I LOVED LOL)  and in life and in everything funny.

I like that they didn’t instantly fall in love with each other, even though the attraction was there. I enjoyed how they had to kind of work for it, each in a way. I LOVE the fact that meeting each other made them see a different side of themselves. Not a side they knew, but a side of how they could be. The only problem is knowing if it will be worth it, or if the changes will change too much of them, specially Dean.

I think the Romantic Comedy genre is sometimes underestimated. Because they usually are lighter reads, some people may think they are silly or not as great, or just too easy to write. But I disagree. Writing stories that are truly funny is very difficult, because us readers can feel when it’s being forced. As for being silly? Well give me this kind of silly anyday because I LOVE it! The Romantic Comedy genre was being forgotten by me and I’m really glad I’ve found great new names to add to my favorites and Rachel’s is on my favorites list. Not only in the funny category but in every one of them! I love her writing and I love her characters and I wish her the best in everything she writes, because I don’t need proof that she is one of the best out there!

ARC Review: Neighbors With Benefits (Anderson Brothers #2) by Marissa Clarke

Good morning, Book People!!

I hope you all had a great start to your weekends. Our winter break is coming and even though I will have more time for reading and reviewing, I’ll also be poorer, since all my students will be on vacation…

Today I’m going to review an ARC (Advanced Readers Copy) and it was a good story! It was funny and sweet and flirty. Something to set our moods after some heavy  or dark reads…

25644427

sinopsis

Love thy sexy jerk of a neighbor…

CEO Michael Anderson might be something of a “control freak.” Still, he’s not quite sure why his therapist thinks dogsitting will fix anything—especially since he and the canine share a kind of mutual loathing. And to make matters worse, a house sitter moves in next door disrupting his peace—and his dates—with the worst possible music at the worst possible time… every time.

Free-spirited artist Mia Argaropolis has settled into the perfect gig—housesitting in NYC’s Upper West Side while working as an art therapist. Too bad she’s stuck living next door to a bossy control freak with a penchant for calling building security when she blasts music to drown out the noises coming through his bedroom wall.

Post-apocalyptic dinner rolls that nearly take her kitchen with them, a douchebag ex, and a Shih Tzu with the personality of Godzilla attack Mia in one day, and her unlikely neighbor comes to the rescue. Like it was her fault. And now, somehow, they find themselves engaged? Both agree, this neighborly feud just got taken to a whole new level.

MY REVIEW:

***ARC received in exchange of an honest review***

Neighbors with Benefits is a standalone novel, despite being book 2 in the Anderson Brothers series. I actually haven’t read book 1, but I sure will, because I got intrigued about how the couple in it became how they are in book 2.

So, Neighbors with Benefits is actually different than what I thought it’d be. I thought we would get a hot CEO that was a complete jerk and who would keep “fighting” with the sassy heroine. That actually happens, but Michael Anderson isn’t the jerk, or the player, everyone, and specially Mia, think he is. I LOVED Michael and all his “stuck-upness”.

This story isn’t your typical control-freak CEO meets girl and starts having kinky sex with her. Another thing I thought it would be. Not that I’m complaining either way. I LOVE those CEO books, but I also enjoyed THIS book a LOT! It was super funny and the characters have the kind of chemistry that is so great to see in Romantic Comedy books.

The banter between Michael and Mia is super funny and they are so cute together. I love how they balance each other out. Mia gives Michael’s life the colorful and mess it needs, while Michael brings the responsibility and organization that comes with his control-freak ways that Mia so needs!

Michael and Mia meet while she is house-sitting for Michael’s neighbor. But what Mia doesn’t know is that the hot guy she just met is the one that keeps complaining to the building management about her. Mia is a total free spirit. She is messy, she is noisy, she is everything Michael’s therapist prescribed him…Oh and she is a total dog person. And Michael is taking care of a dog assigned to him by said therapist.

After  a lot of messed up situations, one of them that brings Mia to become homeless, she goes to live with Michael, to babysit for him. And there, their friendship really starts growing. Michael is instantly attracted to Mia, from their first encounter, and so is she. But Michael she isn’t interested in just being another one. She wants picnics in the beach and flowers in bed, and she thinks Michael is all about the player life. Which is so far from the truth….

Michael is completely focused on his work, in his family company. From his two brothers, he is the most focused one on that. All work and all serious. So yeah, you can say he really needs Mia in his life.

And between all that, in order to help and save Mia from her ex, Michael starts a story about her being his fiancé, so he actually is her date for her best friend’s wedding.

Now…about Mia’s friends…I didn’t like them AT ALL. They all took her for granted, and were borderline bullies in their behavior. Like Mia couldn’t get herself a job, a home and a boyfriend. She not only does all that, but she’s got the most eligible boyfriend EVER! Go Mia!!

The problem is that it’s not true…or is it? I get Mia’s reticence in giving herself to Michael, just as I get his own reticence in showing to the world he can settle down…And in the middle of all that, there’s also Mia’s friends in the retirement center she works in (she is a volunteer and has comissionated some paintings, she’s an artist, but seems like not everyone knows this side of her) and Michael’s new dog and the business he is trying to win…Well, they all have their plates full. But when it comes to love…nothing is full enough that we can’t get a little space for love, right?

What I like most about this book, besides the banter and funny moments, is the fact that the hero and the heroine truly work together (when they get their heads out of their asses LMAO). They complement each other perfectly, and with Michael, Mia can be her true self. She can show the parts of her that she kept locked and didn’t even show her friends. Michael is also a changed man after Mia, even his brothers can see it. He not only gets less serious, and more humble, but he truly learns a lot with her, and it even helps him in his business.

The only problem is that, despite working so well together, they can also combust together. When you are clumsy, free and crazy as Mia and all prim and proper like Michael, it’s a recipe for disaster. But it might also be recipe for a great love story!!!
