Hello, bookworms!!!

I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but I cut back a lot on the blog tours. This one though, I couldn’t pass up!

Mists of the Serengeti by Leila Attar is just one of those books. It’ll definitely leave you speechless and so full of emotions!!!

sinopsis

Once in Africa, I kissed a king…

“And just like that, in an old red barn at the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro, I discovered the elusive magic I had only ever glimpsed between the pages of great love stories. It fluttered around me like a newborn butterfly and settled in a corner of my heart. I held my breath, afraid to exhale for fear it would slip out, never to be found again.”

When a bomb explodes in a mall in East Africa, its aftershocks send two strangers on a collision course that neither one sees coming.

Jack Warden, a divorced coffee farmer in Tanzania, loses his only daughter. An ocean away, in the English countryside, Rodel Emerson loses her only sibling.

Two ordinary people, bound by a tragic afternoon, set out to achieve the extraordinary, as they make three stops to rescue three children across the vast plains of the Serengeti—children who are worth more dead than alive.

But even if they beat the odds, another challenge looms at the end of the line. Can they survive yet another loss—this time of a love that’s bound to slip through their fingers, like the mists that dissipate in the light of the sun?

“Sometimes you come across a rainbow story—one that spans your heart. You might not be able to grasp it or hold on to it, but you can never be sorry for the color and magic it brought.”

A blend of romance and women’s fiction, Mists of The Serengeti is inspired by true events and contains emotional triggers, including the death of a child. Not recommended for sensitive readers. Standalone, contemporary fiction.

MY REVIEW:

***ARC received in exchange of an honest review***

Do you know when you find that book that is THE ONE? The one book that will speak to your soul like not many of them do? Well, Mists of the Serengeti is that one for me.

I didn’t read the blurb when I signed up for the ARC. Because I don’t like to read blurbs and I trust Leylah Attar’s writing. And after this book I REALLY trust it. 5% in and I was already crying (and to make me cry is by a story is not an easy feature).

This is one of the most beautiful books I’ve ever read. EVER. You know I’m terrible at choosing, but from my almost 2500 read books, I can definitely point Mists of the Serengeti as one of the best books I’ve ever read. IN MY LIFE! I’ve read it days ago and I’m still feeling EVERYTHING. Leylah Attar is a genius. Her writing is beyond spectacular. Not only the story is beautiful, but her writing too is beautiful. It definitely manifests itself in this story, we can see the beauty of spectacular writing. And it’s a joy. You’ll want to cry not only for the story, but for the fact the story is so beautifully written.

Mists of the Serengeti will break your heart. Into a million different pieces. But it will also mend it and make it swell so much you’ll feel like it could burst out of your chest. The writing is amazing. Poetic and powerful, Leylah’s words will make you feel so much you might feel overwhelmed by how strongly they’ll move you.

This is more than a love story between a man and a woman. It’s more than a story, period. Mists of the Serengeti is maybe a species of book that sometimes you feel it’s extinct. It goes beyond the act of reading. It literally moves you. It heals you. It overwhelms you. And it makes you want to read more just for the pleasure of finding another book like it. I don’t think that’s quite possible, the story is unique and the writing is so moving. I can list only a few books that made me feel quite like it and I have a LONG list of read books.

I know we’re only in the first month of the year, but I dare say that if you could only read one book in 2017, it’d have to be this one. It’s like the rare gem of a book we so rarely find, it’s different and fresh. I had no idea going in what this book would be about and every new chapter brought a new surprise for me. It has romance, it has angst, it has sadness, it deals with a difficult topic (one I had no idea existed).

Mists of the Serengeti is beyond epic. Because of its characters, which I loved because I related to them from the moment they first appeared. EVERY. SINGLE. ONE. OF. THEM (not the bad guys, though. I hated those lol). It’s also because of the story/plotline and how well it was executed. And most of all, because of Leyla Attar’s writing. I LOVE, just LOVE, experiencing books with such a level of writing that it’ll make you want to cry for how beautiful and moving the words are. I live to find these kinds of books. Books with words that fit so perfectly they’ll fulfill your heart and soul.

“People will love you. People will hate you. And it always has more to do with them, than it does with you.”

I could talk for hours of how great this story was. How great the characters were, but I still can’t get past how great it’s making me feel. Extremely beautiful, Leyla Attar’s words will take you beyond the pages of your book/device and they’ll transport you to Tanzania’s Serengeti, to her characters hearts and they’ll give you ALL THE FEELS.

1485491858757

From Goma, to Scholastic and Jack and Ro, each character will make you a better reader, they’ll fill your heart in all the right places. They’ll mend it after it gets broken, because it will get broken. But it’s okay, because life can be sad. Terrible things can happen. But how we learn from it and how we survive those terrible things will change us. Mists of the Serengeti shows us how powerful love can be. Not just for the love story or all the love in it. But because you WILL love this book. And after finishing reading it, you’ll see how strongly it’ll make you feel. How you’ll feel overwhelmed and how you simply have no words for how much you’ll love it. At least that’s how I’m feeling right now.

Unlike a lot of my favorite reads, I don’t wish I could unread this book to read it all over again for the first time, because I can’t imagine not having read it. I’m not being an a** kisser when I say that my life wouldn’t be the same without reading this book. It impacted me and I literally can’t imagine not having read it, because now this story is part of my life. Every single person on the planet should read this book. We need the tears as much as we need the laughs. Just like we need the rain to experience the beauty of a rainbow. You need to read this book, just to experience the beauty of Leylah Attar’s words and how moving this story is.

The epilogue in special. I ABSOLUTELY LOVED it. I don’t mind books with no epilogues, but this time I would have minded. I might not have realized it, before reading it, but it’s one part of the book that you simply HAVE to experience. After the whole story, the epilogue will be the perfect way to crown this masterpiece!

As I said, I could talk about it for hours, but even so I’d still not have all the words to express how I feel after reading this book, how incredibly moving it is and how Leyla Attar’s words can be so powerful and beautiful, so I’ll leave you with this quote: “You ever wonder what we’d find if we could pick up the threads back to the point where things unravel where paths cross and lives pivot, and people come together?”. Well, after reading Mists of the Serengeti you definitely will!

MY REVIEW:

***ARC received in exchange of an honest review***

Oh wow! First of all, I’ve been reading the Chicagoland Vampires series for years now and the fact I got to read an ARC of the last book is just so amazing!! It’s truly an honor and something I do not take for granted.

I’ve loved this series from the first book, when Chloe first introduced us to Merit and her friend Mallory and Ethan. I absolutely LOVED Ethan from the moment I first “met” him! And even though this is a paranormal/urban fantasy series, Chloe made her characters very relatable and there was a lot of feelings in every book. She made me love them. She made me cry. She made me smile and laugh out loud. She made me feel every emotion that just a good writer can make a reader few. I went from a “I love Chloe Neill” phase to a “I HATE Chloe Neill” one with these books. But it didn’t last, because she’s an amazing writer and she definitely redeemed herself. I can definitely say that I LOVE Chloe Neill! She created one of my all time favorite series for sure!

Whenever I’m in a “book funk” I choose a paranormal book, because it’s guaranteed they’ll get me out of my funk. Specially if it’s a good story, packed with action and with a truly kick-ass heroine. The Chicagoland Vampires series is one of those. But you can (and will) enjoy these books even if you’re not in a funk. They’re THAT good!

Merit and her gang are the best kind of characters to read about! Not to mention Ethan. They are so entertaining together! I love her sense of humor and her appetite (seriously, this girl can EAT! LOL).

From the moment I saw the cover of this book, I knew I’d love it, because, not like the previous 12 books, it doesn’t have only Merit in it. It has Ethan. So it had to be a special one. And when I got it (as you know I don’t like to read blurbs, specially if it’s a book whose author I already know and trust) I didn’t know before reading it that Blade Bound would be the last installment in the series

But I was right, it is pretty special and there’s a reason Ethan is on the cover. The bond he and Merit share is as stronger as ever and in this book we can see how they are truly partners and equals. From the way they joke with each other, to the way they now know each other and can complete each other sentences and thoughts, their love became as fierce as they did. It was a pleasure to read this book. They’ve came a long way and everything they went through was worth it, just so we could read this book.

I also love their relationships with their friends, specially Catcher and Mallory (I love those two). I love Merit’s grandfather, as usual. We can definitely see where she gets her spunk (and her appetite) from. And the Cadogan House vamps are also pretty entertaining, as usual, specially Luc and Lindsay.

In this book, Merit and Ethan have to face a very surprising enemy (I loved how Chloe changed things up) and they don’t have to face it alone. For me the story came full cicle, because we can see how each character grew in the story. They’re stronger, and because their bonds are also stronger, they can face anything that comes their way!! It was awesome to see them standing together, to fight or to have fun.

I really really enjoyed this series and I loved this book. It was the perfect ending to a perfect series!!!!

Carol’s Favorite Books of 2016

img_6109

Hello, hello, hello, book lovers!!!

As you can see (and as usual) I’m late in the “Favorite books of 2016” party! LOL

Last year I planned to post my favorites each month, but the year completely swalled me, specially the second semester!

But I’m back, again!!! I have some projects for this year and a second blog (in Portuguese) coming! I’m also still IN LOVE with “bookstagramming” (if you’re on Instagram, follow me there! @beautyandthebeastlybooks)!!

I have 30 favorite books, which may seem a lot for a list of favorites, but I ended up reading 401 books in 2016 ( the goal for this year is officially 450, but I’ll try for 500). So my number of favorites is less than 10% of what I read, so it’s not that many!!

Here they are in the order I read them:

  • Unhinge by Calia Read4.5 stars: I loved loved this book! I loved Unravel (the first book – also a standalone) and Victoria and her story really intrigued me when she was mentioned in it Her story though…We have hints of what it be through Unhinge, but in the end there are a LOT of surprises coming our way! Victoria’s story might not be as dark as the one in Unravel, but the twists and turns will definitely keep you on your toes! Calia is a GREAT writer!

  • Dirty Ugly Toy by K. Webster5 stars: I was completely HOOKED on this book from page 1. I couldn’t stop reading it for anything and it was an AMAZING story! K. Webster definitely impressed me and won a ticket to my auto-clicks. Her writing is so good and even though we might have seen so many stories in that corner of the dark sub-genre, her story is so unique and fresh! I absolutely LOVED reading this book and recommended it to all my friends and every one of them who has read it agreed with me!

  • Dawn of Forever by Jewel E. Ann5 stars: This book was so amazing! It was the PEFECT conclusion to Jessica and her brother’s story. It was packed with action and so enlightining! This series were my first books by Jewel E. Ann and she definitely impressed me! All of them featured my lists of favorites. Dawn of Forever is a story so original, so emotional and so well written! A fresh story by an author I’m definitely keeping my eyes on!!

  • This is War, Baby by K. Webster5 stars: For me this book a perfect story of second chances. Not really a second chance love, but how a character (or more than one) has a second chance at happiness. I absolutley LOVED this books. It’s a dark, mind f*** story with some twists I didn’t see coming and I could feel myself falling more and more in love with the story and with War, of course. I definitely didn’t see that coming!

  • Sparrow by L.J. Shen5 stars: I LOVED Sparrow! It’s the first book by L.J. Shen I’ve read and it won’t be the last. I don’t consider it a dark book, but it is a mafia one, which isn’t a genre I’m particularly interested in, but in this case I’m really glad I read it!!

  • Undeniably You by Jewel E. Ann 5 stars: I have a feeling Jewel will be one of the most featured authors in my favorites list this year! I was so surprised (positively) by this book! I wasn’t expecting the level of tension, ansgt and all the feels it gave me! It’s one of those book you simply HAVE to read to understand how much it makes you feel! Absolutely LOVED it!!

  • Unseen Messages by Pepper Winters4.5 stars: This book is so different than Pepper’s previous books, yet it is still a Pepper Winters book. Filled with her talented way to tell a story. This book was real, different and absolutely beautiful. It made me cry and smile. It’s an incredible story! Stelle and Galloway’s beautiful journey will transport you inside the pages of this book and you won’t want to leave!! Beautifully written and captivating from the start to the end!

  • Sweetest Venom (Virtue #2) by Mia Asher5 stars: Mia Asher was brilliant writing this book! We waited a long time for the sequel to Easy Virtue, but it did not disappoint! Mia gave us what her book and characters needed. It was real, honest and it left me with a big smile on my face when I finished reading it just a few hours after starting it. Mia writes angst like no one and she gets the right ammount the story needs and doesn’t overdo it! It was perfect. The perfect ending to Blaire’s story! It was truly her story and I loved seeing her maturing through the story. It was bittersweet and beautiful to read this book!

  • Turbulence by Whitney G.5 stars:  This book was AMAZING! It was definitely worth the wait and I’m really happy Whitney went back to writing! 5% in I knew I would love this book, I just never knew how much! I adored every page of it and every plot twist (specially the ones I didn’t see coming). I wish this story never ended because I want to read more of it!

  • Brotherhood in Death (In Death #42)by J.D. Robb5 stars: This has got to be one of my favorite books in the In Death series. I always love when they show us Eve and Roarke’s day-to-day lives and their routine and how they are apart from Eve’s investigations. This time it focused a lot on one of my favorite characters, Mr. Mira and I loved it! Roarke as usual is amazing. But what I love the most about this book is how Eve doesn’t even realise how much she’s changed and that she lets herself care for people, her officers, her detectives and her friends. I feel like a weight has been lifted from her shoulders in every book and it’s been a pleasure to see it.

  • Rhapsodic by Laura Thalassa5 stars –  This book was my find of the year! I found it in a picture on Instagram and I just HAD to read it. The cover is BEAUTIFUL. In the photo I saw it, the person compared the hero of Rhapsodic, Desmond, to Rhysand from ACOMAF and I love that book. And boy, does Des give Rhys a run for his money! I think Rhapsodic is more mature and the story is very original. The author’s writing style is SO GOOD! I really liked the way the story was built and written, it spans from the past (7/8 years before) to the present in a perfect way. To understand the main characters, Des and Callie, we need to know how they met and what happened 7 years before. I kept falling in love with Des (and this book) in every chapter, from present to past. This is a book you simply cannot pass, you HAVE TO READ IT!!!

  • Yours to Bare by Jessica Hawkins5 stars – This is a PHENOMENAL book! Yours to Bare is one of those rare books that make us think that if we had to choose only one more book to read, it would have to be it. It has the right amount of angst and the story flows so perfectly! The only flaw in this book is that it had to end! I believe it’s Jessica Hawkin’s best work so far ande I’m so happy I got to read it! Yours to Bare is provocative, romantic, tantalizing, angsty and so much more, you simply won[‘t be able to forget about it after  you read it!

  • The Hating Game by Sally Thorne5 stars – I LOVED this book! This is the kind of book that will for sure get you out of a “book funk”. It’s funny and light, but it’s also got substance. The story, just like the characters, is more than what it seems at first.

Have you read any of those books?
Tell me in the comments! Also let me know how many books you red in 2016 and how many favorites you had!

Hey bookies!!!

Happy Monday!!!

I hope you all had a good weekend!

Here I am with a new mini-review post!! I read Break My Heart by Esther M. Soto back in September. It’s the sequel of Hold My Heart and I really really like this series!

sinopsis

MY REVIEW:

WARNING: This review contain a few spoilers from Book 1.

Wow! If Hold My Heart was a nice surprise, Break My Heart was punch in the gut!
What an amazing sequel to an already great story!!

Break My Heart picks up exactly where Hold My Heart left out and through the whole story we get to unravel more secrets and also more about the mystery that is Illeana Harper’s life and ability to time-travel.

I was surprised (happily so). The love she shares with Tommy is so much more than what I originally thought. And everytime we get to unravel a new layer to this story, it gets more exciting!!

As in the first book, the background story in Break My Heart takes a big role in the story and I have a feeling it’s going to take an even bigger one in the next (3rd) book. I think Illeana and Tommy’s time in the war has a lot to do with the mystery in the story. I can’t wait for the next book to see more of it!

I really like that this book shows that admitting you love someone and getting together is not what that makes a relationship. It felt very real to see Tommy and Illeana’s struggle to be a couple, specially because they’ve been best friends for so long. I LOVE when we get glimpses from the past in the war and how their friendship began. Those glimpses really make the story “realer” and make us relate more to it and the characters.

Things are getting clearer and every new discovery just adds to the story and makes it even more addictive! This story flows so well and it’s so “expertantly” written that when you finish it, you just can’t wait for more!!!!

Hey bookies!!!

So, I was writing my Favorites of 2016 post and when I reached The Bourbon Thief on my list, I had so much to say that I decided to write a Mini Review post first! LOL

I got an ARC of it before it was released and read it back in April.

So here it is, I hope you enjoy it!

sinopsis

From the internationally celebrated author of the Original Sinners series comes a brand-new tale of betrayal, revenge and a family scandal that bore a 150-year-old mystery

When Cooper McQueen wakes up from a night with a beautiful stranger, it’s to discover he’s been robbed. The only item stolen—a million-dollar bottle of bourbon. The thief, a mysterious woman named Paris, claims the bottle is rightfully hers. After all, the label itself says it’s property of the Maddox family who owned and operated Red Thread Bourbon distillery since the last days of the Civil War until the company went out of business for reasons no one knows… No one except Paris.

In the small hours of a Louisville morning, Paris unspools the lurid tale of Tamara Maddox, heiress to the distillery that became an empire. But the family tree is rooted in tainted soil and has borne rotten fruit. Theirs is a legacy of wealth and power, but also of lies, secrets and sins of omission. The Maddoxes have bourbon in their blood—and blood in their bourbon. Why Paris wants the bottle of Red Thread remains a secret until the truth of her identity is at last revealed, and the century-old vengeance Tamara vowed against her family can finally be completed.

MY REVIEW:

***ARC received in exchange of an honest opinion***

OH WOW! This book is different from anything else Tiffany has published before.

Is it a bad thing? Hell no! I’m amazed by Tiffany’s talent for telling stories and The Bourbon Thief is a story that can’t be forgotten!!

Tiffany has now taken my two favorite (and taboo) subjects and turned them into epic stories ( I even wrote about those subjects myself, years ago, but in the same story). I did not see that coming at all and I absolutely LOVE to be surprised by Tiffany! Even though some of the things that happen I just KNEW would happen, other things were complete surprises!

Tiffany blew my mind and there ins’t BDSM, or even that much sex, in this book. Not that I thought she couldn’t, but Tiffany definitely knows how to write a story that goes beyond sex (The Original Sinners series already proved that even though there is a lot of sex in it).

I was so hooked reading this book that I couldn’t stop and I couldn’t belive when I saw I was already at 70%! This is a story full of action, full of an actual story, ful of talent, full of feelings and full of surprises. In other words, it’s an AMAZING story, you simply can’t miss! It will leave you thinking “What the hell did I just read???!!!”, which for me is one of the biggest complients a reader can give an author

Well done, Tiffany! You hooked me in another one of your books, which I blame on your astounishing talent to write them!!!

Forgive me if I’m wrong – but you expect me to drive into Manhattan, on Christmas Eve, in holiday traffic, and pick up a random piece of jewelry you purchased over the phone for Tatum, and to bring it home in time for Christmas morning?

This is, at best, impossible. Also, I have sent you a reminder every day that Christmas was almost upon us.

RE: Christmas Shopping List

As long as that box is under the tree by six in the morning, I don’t give a fuck how long it takes you – it can’t possibly take 18 hours, and if it does, you’re just wasting time arguing with me.

They’ll come down whenever you get into the city and let you in the store. If you think the ring isn’t appropriate, pick something else out.

And I paid for your “vacation”, so you can at least help me out. A little gratitude wouldn’t kill you.

RE: Christmas Shopping List

I have decorated your entire house, organized the catering for your office party, driven Tatum all over Boston for her own shopping needs, had the Bentley detailed, your suits dry cleaned, and the baseboards refinished.

But of course, if that is not enough gratitude, that let me know what else I can do for you. I’m sure a six hour trek to Manhattan and back is not enough.

Tatum has enough rings. Might I suggest a necklace? From a local jeweler?

You are getting entirely too bitchy – I blame Tate. I already paid for the ring, so SOMEONE had better go get it.

And since I’ve been dicking around on the computer dealing with your bullshit, I’ve looked up a couple other items, and now you have even more stops to make.

RE: Christmas Shopping List

I dread to even ask. Alright, I will go to New York, but only because there’s a security deposit box I forgot to empty before I moved. I can kill two birds with one stone. If you’ll please call the bank and ensure they stay open for me, then I’ll be more than happy to do your chores.

Please send me the addresses of the shops I will be stopping at and the cell phone numbers of the people I will be dealing with, I would like for this to be as smooth as possible.

Goddamn, was that so difficult? I’ll make the calls, you just get there. Here’s your list:

Cartier Central Park
767 5th Ave.
(212) 555-4486
– call that number if someone isn’t waiting for you. Fernando will come down and let you in.

Agent Provocateur
611 5th Ave
(212) 555 – 3890
– it’s underwear, don’t faint when you walk in. Janelle will meet you there and have a selection to choose from. Pick what you know I’ll like best.

Kings County Distillery
299 Sands Street, Bldg 121
(347) 555-0117
– it’s in Brooklyn. I know, I know, deal with it – they’re custom making a batch for Tate, with a special bottle and label.

SHAG Brooklyn
108 Roebling Street
(347) 555-7213
– I’ll let you figure this one out on your own. Ask for Rodolfo, he’s got an entire display of items set up for you to peruse. I trust your instincts implicitly, just remember – this is for Tate.

CALL ME WHEN YOU’RE DONE. And I don’t mean on the road, I mean when you walk out of the last store. I want to make sure you got it all done right.

I have google, and I am not going into SHAG Brooklyn, and that is final. I’m leaving for New York right now, I won’t be able to message you back.

You are going into that store, and THAT is final. If you fucking call me and that list isn’t complete, I will be pissed. Worse – you will have to deal with Tate.

Don’t forget to call me when you’re done.

RE: Christmas Shopping List

Rodolfo was surprisingly educated and well spoken. I feel I learned a lot from him and made adequate choices. I have picked up all the items you requested. I tried to call you, but was sent straight to voicemail. I’m contacting you per your request. If I don’t hear from you in 15 minutes, I will return home.

RE: Christmas Shopping List

While I was quite annoyed at having to drive into the city on Christmas Eve, and the places you made me go to were beyond ridiculous, I must say … a surprise Christmas party at Top of the Strand, in my honor, was a very pleasant and welcome surprise.

You never cease to amaze me. Just when I think you’ve reached new levels of devilishness, you always manage to redeem yourself.

Merry Christmas, sir – there are no two people I would rather spend my holidays with than you and Tatum.

Thank you for everything.
