Book Review: Need (Need #1) by K.I. Lynn and N. Isabelle Blanco

Hello everyone!!

Today I’m going to review one of the books that made my list of Favorites of 2015. I know the year has just begun, but I’m quite picky with my reads lately. I’ve had some 4, 4.5 and 5 stars reads, but only 6 of them made it to the Favorites so far.

sinopsis

Sometimes love happens at first sight, even when you’re at an age where you can’t comprehend what it means.

It was just a crush. They were only kids, after all. But what happens when that feeling never goes away?

Brayden and Kira have been neighbors for years, and best friends since they met. They have a connection that is evident to many, and it’s haunted them their whole lives.

Teenage hormones rage, turning their friendship into something neither can handle. The attraction is carnal, all-consuming, and it seems like it’s only a matter of time before Brayden loses control.

Everything slams to a halt when their single parents decide to get remarried . . . to each other. Bad decisions and broken friendships make living across the hall from the one person you want above all difficult. Luckily for Brayden, it’s only for a few months before he’s off to college in another state, leaving Kira to face high school alone.

Brayden tries to stay away, to forget her, but it’s an impossible task he fails at time and time again. Kira is morphing from a sexy teenager to an irresistible woman, one that knows what she wants and seems hell-bent on getting it.

As Kira’s eighteenth birthday approaches, Brayden has a decision to make. Does he keep running away from the thing he wants the most or does he run toward it?

Is it possible to ever be happy without the one person you need?

————————————

“I’m Brayden, baby. The man you’ve been dreaming about your whole life. And I’m about to fucking show you why.”

Part 1 of a 2 part series.

MY REVIEW:

So, as I said, from my 60 read books in 2015 so far, this is the 6th I chose as a Favorite!

I had no doubts I would like it, after all Need has K.I. Lynn’s name on it and she wrote one of my favorite series in the world (the Breach series), series that featured both my List of Favorites of 2013 and 2014. I’ve never read N. Isabelle Blanco’s work before, but I have no doubt I will be reading her books now!! They write the kind of writing that leaves you with a hell of an impression!!!

I knew I would like it, from the blurb and from the teasers I saw, but I didn’t expect that level of angst, tension and hotness. All traits of a great book in my opinion.

As you all know  I’m all up for angsty books, I love them! And Need has the angst covered more than well!! It was amazing! Despite it being a NA kind of book, you don’t feel any “young” vibes from it, the sexual tension is palpable and the HOTNESS!!! Jesus Christ, Brayden is HOT!

This book broke my heart, stomped on it, made me tense, made my adrenaline levels go off the charts and made me FAN MYSELF! This is the good stuff, seriously!

Need is the kind of story that grips you from the very beginning and make you not want to do anyuthing else until you finish it. And when you do, you wish you had read it slowly just so it wouldn’t have to finish! I couldn’t believe I was getting to the end, and I didn’t know it would have a sequel (shame on me!!), but this time I was actually happy the story wasn’t ending there!

It doesn’t have a cliffy, not in the normal sense. Yes, the story isn’t finish, yes, it leaves you wanting more…Ok, so it has a cliffy, but not a bad one in my opinion. It has the kind of cliffy that just makes you even more anxious for the sequel, but the kind that doesn’t make you wish you haven’t read the book before the series is all out! It was done perfectly!

The story revolves around Kira and Brayden, two people we can see from forever belong together. It’s told in both their POVs, which is something I don’t usually like, but in this case I loved. It made all the difference to see Brayden’s side of the story and see he was in love with Kira, really in love. He isn’t or doesn’t sound like one of those fools in love, one of those heroes who turn into pussies when they fall in love. It was refreshing to see a male character spilling his feelings like that in a way that made him real and approachable, but didn’t take his man card!

“I love you, Kira.” I’m on my knees, both figuratively and literally – worshipping in the most basic sense that a man can worship anything – and those three pitiful words are the only thing I have to voice just how necessary she is to me.

Brayden is good like THAT! He has alpha male written all over him. He truly cares about Kiera, more than she realises, I think. And Kira…I didn’t want to slap her once, which is something I welcome in my heroines ahaha. She gives as much as she gets (no pun intended) and I loved how she grew up and discovered the power of her own sexuality and how sexy she could be. I felt every little thing she felt. When she was hot for Brayden I was (seriously, how can you not????!!), when she was happy I was, when she was devastated, I was. More so than she was, I think, because I saw Brayden’s side and I could see he was truly pinning for her.

I believe what Kira’s mom did was quite shitty of her, but well we can’t judge. I believe Brayden’s father really wasn’t in love with his mother, but what he did is unexcusable.

A character I loved just as much as I loved Brayden and Kira was her brother (and Brayden’s best friend) Ryan. He was super funny and loyal to his sister and also to his best friend. It must be difficult to be in the middle of those two, but so far he has managed it very very well!

I liked the fact the story was told since the moment the three of them met and it goes through the years until Kira’s eighteenth birthday party. That way we can sense how and why they fell in love and how they got to be who they are now.

“You’ve always loved her, and I’m pretty sure she’s loved you from the first time you called her kitty, but she’s seventeen. Do I need to fucking remind you of that?”

As I said I loved how Ryan is such a loyal friend, but he is also loyal to his sister and we can see they really love each other too. Actually the three of them do.

I didn’t like Brayden’s father, he is an asshole and I don’t agree with Kira’s mother, but I could like her. Now, Brayden’s mom, that is a cool lady! I really liked her and how she and Brayden could talk and how supportive she was!

Kira is younger than both Ryan and Brayden so there’s not only the step-siblings thing that keep Brayden from Kira. If it was only the age difference it would be manageable, but having to choose between her and their parents is very hard on him and we can feel that. When Brayden finally admits to her he loves her, he can’t anymore. They have loved each other since forever, but her being younger didn’t know he actually loved her.

She adjusts the cat ears on her head and throws me a huge smile.

Suddenly, I’m not so annoyed anymore. I know it’s the cat ears. It’s kinda stupid that she’s always wearing them, but they’re so cute and funny.

In other words: so her.

But until how long can you deny yourself of something you need more than your lungs need air? Loving Kira is not something Brayden can control just like loving him is not something she can control either, no matter how much she tries to. In his own way Brayden tries to protect not only Kira of a love that can’t be, but also himself, because as long as he can remember he’s been in love with her. The thing is…Kira doesn’t really want to be protected and Brayden’s methods end up hurting more than protecting.

“I hate you,” she spits. lips brushing mine.

I nip her top lip.  “And I love you.

Excuse me?” She gasps.

I’m glad Brayden gets to man up about their situation, but he admiting they can’t be apart will ever be enough? After all, Kira also went through a lot, more than Brayden knows because of her love for him. So when he finally mans up, she also finally shows him she also has grown!!

Now it’s up to him to realise he is not the only one who needs her. And also that he needs to stay away from her. She needs him just as much, but she also needs herself! I can’t wait for Take so see how fair their needs will take them! I didn’t want Kira to do what she did to Brayden but I agree with her motives so I support her, girl power and all! I believe if we didn’t have his POV we’d probably side with Kira with no questions asked…But since we do see his side, we can see he really loves her and needs her, so it’s hard to see both of them suffering for something their parents did!

As I mentioned The Breach series is one of my all time favorite series and although this story is different than the Breach books, it has something in comon with them: you can’t stop reading it and waiting  for more!!!!

No pun intended, but you really need to read this book. Need is the kind of read that you can’t go on without. THE ANGST is the kind you enjoy and K.I. Lynn and N. Isabelle Blanco make you hurt so good!! The story is gritty and raw and the tension makes you want to get inside your reading device (or book) to make them see how things really are!

A NA story like this isn’t easy to find, one so gritty and so raw. One that has the kind of angst that doesn’t come from abuse or darkness ( I love those too, and usually when I get a angsty read those are the reasons for all the angst). But otherwise comes from love, simply (simply because when is love ever simple???) raw and pure love. Love is a great emotion but with it can come some suffering and what I loved about the angst and tension in Need is that it so real. You can relate for real with the characters and that, my friends, isn’t an easy thing to accomplish!

So thank you K.I. Lynn and N.Isabelle Blanco, for giving us such a GREAT book to read. You can make me tense and all angsty anytime you want as long as you write stories as good as Need!!! Now I need to resume my stalking…after all I can’t wait for Take!!!
